INTRODUCTION

"Mercy, a 15-year-old girl, is faced with a traumatic experience that threatens to shatter her world. But instead of succumbing to despair, she rises above it with courage and resilience. This film tells the story of one young woman's journey from tragedy to triumph and serves as the launching point for a powerful movement.

Although I am an architecture student, I have always been drawn to telling stories and having the power to create new worlds that either people can relate to or escape to. A common question I am asked is how I manage to balance my time between architecture and writing, but I never feel like I have to make time to write; writing and architecture work hand in hand, as in both you are creating something from scratch and building it to tell its own story, through collaboration and constant edits and continued discussions.

In 2022 I wrote and produced a movie funded by the MasterCard Foundation called 'Mercy,' trying to raise awareness about the bravery and resilience of young Kenyan girls. The film also partnered with CNNs my Freedom Day, where the headline ‘Mercy, a film scripted by a 21-year-old Kenyan, set for the official launch, coincides with CNN’s #Myfreedomday campaign’ was used. It has been showing across the world at various international film festivals and East African streaming services. One of my aims for this film was to educate as many people as possible, making the film wholly accessible and free for communities using mobile viewing shows around Kenya.

In 2022 Mercy launched the Think Twice Movement- which is aimed to raise awareness of Gender Based Violence in Kenya, and find resources for women who are surviovors. Mercy also functioned as a platform for more women to share their stories and not feel so alone.

In Kenya, Georgia Fernandes, a 21-year-old student of architecture wrote the script for the film “Mercy”. The film represents the perseverance that thousands of young girls demonstrated during the COVID-19 pandemic, during which statistics of gender-based violence reached appalling heights in Kenya.
